The MCQST Colloquium Series features interdisciplinary talks given by visiting international speakers. The monthly colloquial covers topics spanning all MCQST research units and will be broadcasted live, being made available to audiences worldwide. The main goal of the series is to create the framework for idea exchange, to strengthen links with QST leading groups worldwide, as well as to act as an integral part of the local educational environment.

On 12 November 2019, we are excited to welcome Erez Berg, Associate Professor at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel.

Abstract

Metallic quantum critical phenomena are believed to play a key role in many strongly correlated materials, including high temperature superconductors. Theoretically, the problem of quantum criticality in the presence of a Fermi surface has proven to be highly challenging. However, it has recently been realized that many models used to describe such systems are amenable to numerically exact solution by quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) techniques, without suffering from the fermion sign problem. I will review the status of the understanding of metallic quantum criticality, and the recent progress made by QMC simulations. The results obtained so far will be described, as well as their implications for superconductivity, non-Fermi liquid behavior, and transport in the vicinity of metallic quantum critical points. Some of the outstanding puzzles and future directions are highlighted.

About Erez Berg

Erez Berg is an Associate Professor at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel. He got his PhD from Stanford University in 2009. He was a postdoctoral scholar at Harvard University from 2009-2012, after which he joined the faculty at Weizmann. During 2017-2018 he served as an Associate Professor in the University of Chicago, USA, while retaining his Weizmann Institute affiliation.

He is interested in many-body quantum theory and its applications to condensed matter systems. He has made contributions to the fields of strongly correlated quantum materials, topological phases of matter, and periodically driven quantum systems. Prof. Berg is one of the recipients of the 2019 Blavatnik prize for young scientists in Israel.
