The MCQST Colloquium Series features interdisciplinary talks given by visiting international speakers. The monthly colloquium covers topics spanning all MCQST research units and will be broadcast live via Zoom for audiences worldwide. The main goal of the series is to create the framework for idea exchange, to strengthen links with QST leading groups worldwide, as well as to act as an integral part of the local educational environment.

MCQST Colloquium: Roser Valentí

We are excited to invite you to the colloquium talk by Roser Valentí (Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main).

Agenda

14:00 | Teaser talk by Hannah Lange (LMU) on "Electron pairing from an emergent Feshbach resonance: a scenario for bilayer nickelate superconductors"

14:15 | Coffee break

14:30 | Colloquium talk by Roser Valentí on “Strategies to design quantum materials with exotic properties”

Strategies to design quantum materials with exotic properties

Unconventional superconductivity with high critical temperatures, topologically non-trivial phases, frustrated magnetism, spin-liquids or the intensively discussed Kitaev phases are a few examples of exotic states in quantum materials. One of the big challenges in quantum physics is the microscopic description of such systems. Moreover, being able to understand them implies the possibility of predicting compounds with desirable properties. In this talk, I will present and discuss strategies for designing quantum materials from first principles and by using statistical methods, and will motivate their possible use for present technological applications.

About Roser Valentí

Roser Valenti studied physics at the University of Barcelona (Spain) and received her Ph.D. degree in theoretical physics working on variational wavefunctions for spin systems with M.A. Garcia-Bach from UB and D. Klein from the University of Texas A&M (USA). Before joining the Goethe University Frankfurt as full professor, she was postdoctoral Fulbright fellow at the University of Florida at Gainesville in the group of P.J. Hirschfeld, Habilitation researcher at the University of Dortmund and Heisenberg fellow at the University of Saarland, Germany. Her field of research is computational solid state with a focus on microscopic modeling of correlated materials such as unconventional superconductors, frustrated magnets and systems with topologically non-trivial states via a combination of first-principles-based methods and many-body numerical techniques.
