Unlock the world of science slams!

Together with IMPRS-QST, we are offering a hands-on workshop on science slams. This workshop is designed for anyone intrigued by the world of science communication through the science slam format. By the end of this immersive two-day workshop, you'll be well-prepared to take the stage at the MCQST annual Christmas party with your compelling presentations. The workshop is your gateway to mastering the art of science slam presentations, equipping you with the skills to craft memorable talks that leave a lasting impression.

What is a science slam?

Science slams are becoming increasingly popular. In this novel science communication format, youngs scientists present their research topic in 10 minute talks and afterwards, the audience gets to vote. The slammer‘s presentations should be both entertaining and informative.

Workshop content

The participants get an insight into methods of how to present complex topics in a simplified way and how to add a personal touch to the scientific content. In doing so, you will learn to capture their audience's attention. You will also learn how to present your scientific topics in different scenarios and how to present your work towards different audiences.

Through group work and individual feedback rounds, we ensure that the participants learn in a practice-oriented manner, make real progress in the preparation of the science slam presentations and gain some stage experience.

Nowadays, researchers and experts should be able to present their topics in an appealing and precise way to people from outside their field in a variety of settings. The knowledge and methods developed in our workshops can be easily adapted to different situations.

Focus of the workshop:

  • How do I figure out what’s most important for me about my project?
  • How do I identify what the audience might be interested in?
  • How do I create a story?
  • How do I add a personal touch to my research topic?
  • How do I break down complex matters without becoming imprecise?
  • What can I explain with the help of metaphors, and how do I find such metaphors?
  • Are there other language tools I can use? Is humor the key to success?
  • What makes a sentence appealing?
  • Should I use Power Point presentations or other tools and how do I use them to get real added value?
  • How do I adapt to different target audiences?
  • How should I prepare?
  • How do I rehearse my presentation in a way that my authenticity is preserved and I am well prepared for the stage performance?
  • What can I do about stage fright?
  • What do I have to take care of regarding light and microfones?

About the trainer

Molecular biologist and science communicator Dr. Julia Offe played a key role in developing the “Science Slam” format and establishing it in Germany. She was honored as one of the "100 women of tomorrow" by the "Germany - Land of Ideas" initiative. Her platform scienceslam.de is the most important German platform for science slams.

Through her PhD at the Center for Molecular Neurobiology in Hamburg and many years of research work at Max Planck Institutes and other research institutions, she knows the scientific world from the inside and is familiar with the work of scientists. On the other hand, as a science communicator, she knows about the challenge of presenting complex topics in an appealing and understandable way.
