MCQST Scientists Awarded Poster Prizes at QIP2023

Zahra Baghali Khanian and Vjosa Blakaj won two of the poster prizes by popular vote at the Conference on Quantum Information Processing - QIP2023, which took place this February in Ghent. The QIP is the premier meeting for researchers working in quantum information research. Two out of the four-poster prizes awarded at the conference went to scientists from MCQST and the TUM Department of Mathematics. The awards in value of €1000 each were sponsored by QuSoft Amsterdam.

Dr. Zahra Baghali Khanian, MCQST Distinguished PostDoc at the TUM Department of Mathematics, presented a poster on " Rate distortion theory for mixed states". The poster showcases the study of the compression of mixed-state quantum sources, and how the compression rate can be traded with the error. Namely, the authors characterised the optimal tradeoff between the local error and rate for these quantum sources.

“I really enjoy working in my field of research, and anything that comes out of it is simply a plus. Of course, it's very nice when other people are interested in what you do and want to learn more about it.” - Vjosa Blakaj

Vjosa Blakaj, PhD Student at the TUM Department of Mathematics, presented the poster entitled " Transcendental properties of entropy-constrained sets: Part II". This is a joint work with Chokri Manai, friend and colleague from TUM Mathematics and MCQST. In this paper, the two researchers address the question of the impossibility of certain single-letter formulas by studying the semialgebraic nature of the level sets of various entropy functionals, building on the results obtained in the paper Transcendental Properties of Entropy-Constrained Sets.

About QIP

The international conference on Quantum Information Processing (QIP) is the premier annual meeting for quantum information research. Since the first meeting in Aarhus (Denmark) in 1998, the conference has featured breakthroughs by leaders in the disciplines of computing, cryptography, information theory, mathematics, and physics. The scientific objective of the series is to gather the theoretical quantum information community to present and discuss the latest groundbreaking work in the field.

QIP 2023 was hosted by the Quantum Group of Ghent University. In 2021, MCQST had the opportunity to host QIP 2021 as an online-only event.
